THE INNER SMILE CD available now at Lilias Yoga Store!

"I have been listening to your Inner Smile CD. It is filled with your healing message--your voice alone is a gift, and then your delivery is so inviting, accepting and warm. Listening to it has improved both my teaching and my practice--so thank you!"  - Yael Calhoun, author Create a Yoga Practice for Kids

"Traditionally, Taoist masters from the 6th century B.C. considered the inner smile so precious and sacred that they whispered it in secret, passing the confidence on only to those students deemed worthy of and ready for the information. The sages' high esteem for the gesture was based on their observations that the most accessible and immediate form of bliss energy was in a sincere smile.  In a moment, you'll take one of the feelings associated with a genuine smile with you into a wonderful relaxation-meditation called the inner smile.  From this moment on, let go...release all expectations for the outcome of this practice."

"Practice inner smile in a shortened version each day as you wake up.  In sending love throughout your body, you become more loving to others and more effective in your work. If you have a short time, take a few minutes to radiate the smile throughout your body. Practice in times of stress, anger, fear, impatience, and other draining, low-grade emotions." From "Lilias! Yoga Gets Better With Age"

I pass this along to you with joy and hopefulness. Here are two short poems I love — the first from The Bhagavadgita, the second from Longfellow.

Never the spirit was born
The spirit shall cease to be never
Never was time it was not
End and beginning are dreams
Birthless and deathless and changeless
Abideth the spirit forever
Death does not touch it at all.
…The Bhagavadgita

For age is opportunity no less
Than youth itself, though in another dress,
And as the evening twilight fades away
The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day.
…Longfellow

You’ll find pieces that are restorative for yourself. The ending of Wendell Berry’s poem is a good example:

I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world and am free.
…Wendell Berry

Lilias! Yoga Gets Better with Age
Reviewed by Felicia M. Tomasko, LAYOGA
     "
Yoga teachers teach from their own practice, but few have taught so publicly for so long as Lilias Folan. Beginning in 1972, Lilias introduced millions of Americans to yoga with her PBS television show Lilias! Yoga and You.

Lilias has found that her practice and her teaching have naturally and even necessarily changed over time as she has physically transformed into having what she describes as her current middle-aged body.  Lilias draws on her years of experience, along with living in a changing body to write her new book Lilias! Yoga Gets Better With Age. In it, she describes how to adapt yoga for a body growing older.
The book is organized by the koshas, layers that make up the bodymind, the physical, breath, mental/emotional, wisdom and bliss bodies. Within these, she emphasizes the importance of warm-ups in a physical asana (posture) practice, particularly for older adults. She describes a yin approach to stretching (as opposed to yin yoga) that utilizes resistance, relaxation and re-stretching, a technique she says is integral to her teaching and practice. The chapter on the pranic or breath or energy body, introduces pranayama (breath techniques.
Yoga Poses for a Desert Island is a chapter in which Lilias explains her 44 favorite poses, complete with modifications and yin stretching instructions. Lilias' smiling face peers out from many of the photographs illustrating asana (poses). Sequences with multiple parts include photos for different segments, a useful addition for readers, following her instructions. She includes a chapter on partner yoga to enjoy the support of another person in practice.
Lilias! is beneficial for beginners in midlife or beyond who are starting up a practice, along with longtime practitioners who are looking for methods for adapting a practice to a changing body as well as teachers serving older populations."

"Lilias,
Before the weekend slipped away, I wanted to drop you a note to thank you for making yesterday so special. What are the odds that a doc would be invited to such an event and wind up sitting at your table? There are no coincidences and I have come to recognize that those I encounter on my journey have been placed there to bless this strange path that I have stumbled upon, and help me find my way.
Your book is wonderful and has been placed among my most precious tools of medicine. It will help heal many of my patients.
Thank you for what you have given the world."

Lilias! Yoga Gets Better with Age reviewed by Marti Glenn, PhD, President, Santa Barbara Graduate Institute, degrees in Somatic Psychology
Lilias! Yoga Gets Better with Age offers inspiration and fresh approaches to the practice of yoga for beginners, long time students and teachers alike. For those who have only thought about incorporating yoga to those who want to explore a path of deepened practice, this book is a treasure map, a reference manual for so much more than a physical practice. Lilias lays the foundation for understanding the journey that fosters getting better with age and opening to a deeper, more vibrant life.
You will find here a system for understanding and honoring the different stages of life, breath and the doors it opens to the deeper self, ways to loosen the knots of stress, sooth the senses and calm the wandering mind, expand self awareness and connect with our body wisdom and a heart centered practice to awaken bliss and gratitude.
Lilias, considered the First Lady of Yoga, is philosopher and teacher, guide and companion. Just as she personalized each television show, here she speaks directly to each student page by page, offering personal, step-by-step preparation, pointers for special challenges, partner work and a complete guide to a gentle, yet powerful practice of yoga. Her love, her own beingness and her commitment to a larger life shines through on every page.
